8 June 2006. JSC “Stantsiya Ekibastuz GRES-2” has announced the winner of the open international tender for feasibility study related to boosting and upgrading of the power plant. The project provides for two new 500-600 MW power-generating units to be installed. According to preliminary estimates, the construction cost of the said power-generating units could amount to billion. Tender applications had been submitted by several companies from the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation. After the applications had been considered, the tender commission of experts defined the winner. It was the Kazakhstan Company LLP “Institute KazNIPIEnergoprom,” Almaty. The Institute is to submit its feasibility study effort results by 30 September 2006. Should the project be implemented, the capacity of Ekibastuz GRES-2 will be increased up to 2000-2200 MW, which will make it possible to meet the growing demand for electric power in the Republic of Kazakhstan and to arrange electricity exports to the Russian Federation. Besides, the Board of Directors of JSC “Stantsiya Ekibastuz GRES-2” has approved the “Ekibastuz GRES-2 Refurbishment Program for the period until 2010 with prospective investments of about .5 million. Under this Program, disbursement of about million is planned in 2006. The Management Board of JSC “Stantsiya Ekibastuz GRES-2” has started to implement the given Program, which will improve reliability of the existing capacities, boost the plant’s performance and ensure payback of the investments within 8 years. The Program is expected to be financed by using borrowed funds Both projects are being implemented in compliance with the Instructions of the Presidents of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation concerning the promotion of integration processes in the power engineering, and in accordance with the Memorandum for the Introduction of a Single Electrical Power Market of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation and Direct Investments into the Power Sector Enterprises.
JSC “Stantsiya Ekibastuz GRES-2” is a Russian-Kazakh Joint Venture. CJSC RAO UES International owns a 50 % stake in the power plant. The remaining 50% is owned by the Republic of Kazakhstan. The plant’s installed capacity is 1000 MW (2 units of 500 MW each). It is one of Kazakhstan’s state-of-the-art power stations. Its first power-generating unit was commissioned in the end of 1990; its second unit – in late 1993. The plant was projected during the Soviet times, and it is designed for the capacity of 4,000 MW with 8 power-generating units of 500 MW each. That is why its basic common auxiliaries have been built in view of this capacity. Ekibastuz GRES-2 accounts for about 8% of the total power output generated in Kazakhstan.
